The complaint that a restaurant in Pefkohori, Halkidiki, serves a protected species of shark, was proceeded by the environmental organization isa, which states that the incident has already been reported to the Fisheries Directorate of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, seeking immediate investigation and imposition.

The new incident of illegal fishing, trading and demonstration of strictly protected shark has come to light via a video released on social media from this restaurant as a “crop”.

The video shows the type of Alopias Superciliosus (alopia the magnificence), whose species of fishing, unloading, sale and demonstration is strictly forbidden. In this particular case, the restaurant was probably selling the shark as “Galeos”.

Its global population has been evaluated in the red list of IUCN’s endangered species as vulnerable which means that it is threatened with extinction, while in the recent renewal of Greece’s red catalog there was not enough data on population evaluation.

At the same time, alopia the grandeur is protected by a number of European laws and recommendations of the General Fisheries Committee on the Mediterranean.

According to an ISEA survey, more than 60% of shark and salad products in Greek markets carry incorrect or no marking, often as “coverage” for the trade of protected species, which are prohibited from fishing and selling as “galeus”, “Rina”.

ISEA calls on the competent authorities to investigate the identification of managers, imposition of sanctions, and to take substantial prevention and information measures to protect marine species threatened with extinction.
