The tree lights are powered by a diesel powered generator due to the power outage caused by Russian bombing
His officials Kiev the lights came on yesterday, Monday, at Christmas tree of the city, assuring that they will not allow Russia to “steal” Christmas from the children of Ukraine.
The day began with a series of attacks against critical infrastructure in Kyiv. But in the evening it was placed in the center of the Ukrainian capital a 12-meter-tall tree adorned with doves, the symbol of peace, while its lights were blue and yellow, the colors of the Ukrainian flag. On top of it is placed the coat of arms of Ukraine, a golden trident.
A few dozen residents of the capital braved the cold and went downtown to admire the tree.
“The Russians are trying to deprive our citizens of a normal life, but we will not allow them to steal the biggest holidays – New Year and Christmas – from our children,” stressed Vitali Klitschkothe mayor of Kyiv.
(Following the Julian calendar, Ukrainians celebrate Christmas on January 7, but polls show that a growing number of people would prefer the date to be changed to December 25 to coincide with celebrations in other countries.).
Initially, the mayor of Kyiv was reluctant to put up a Christmas tree in the Ukrainian capital, as Russian bombings have caused power outages in much of the country. In this context the city adapted and the tree lights are powered by diesel powered generator.
“We called it ‘the Christmas tree of the undefeated Ukraine,'” Klitschko said, stressing that everything was done so that “the children could celebrate despite the difficult times.”
