The government has put the army on alert to help drive the ambulances
Britain has warned its citizens to avoid “dangerous activities” tomorrow, Wednesday, when ambulance drivers and emergency call center workers are set to strike over pay and to allow only those whose lives are in danger to be taken to hospital. .
Speaking as tens of thousands of striking nurses protested outside hospitals and on the eve of a strike by ambulance crews, Deputy Health Secretary Will Queens warned of the problems patients would face.
“In cases where citizens are planning some dangerous activity, I would advise against it,” he told the BBC.
NHS ambulances will still handle the most life-threatening cases, but ministers are meeting with unions today to discuss exactly which cases the ambulances will go to.
The government has put the army on standby to help drive the ambulances although Queens clarified that soldiers will not have all the powers that professional ambulance drivers have.
“What they won’t be able to do is break the law, for example, they won’t break traffic lights, they won’t be able to turn on the siren. They will be there to drive the ambulances in a supportive character,” the minister said.
