Almost two months after being elected president for the third time, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said this Tuesday (20) that he spoke with the leader of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and that he was once again congratulated for his electoral victory.
🇧🇷[Putin] wished a good government and the strengthening of the relationship between our countries”, tweeted the PT. “Brazil has returned, seeking dialogue with everyone and committed to the search for a world without hunger and with peace.”
The speech mentions two aspects generated by the War in Ukraine — the destabilization of the region, with the return of the war to Europe, and the increase in global hunger, especially in Africa, due to problems in the supply of grains and food from both countries in conflict.
On the eve of the second round, in October, Putin was questioned by the Sheet about possible preferences for the future occupant of the Planalto Palace. At the time, he dodged and said he would maintain good relations with both Lula and Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
In addition to being part of the Brics, a bloc of emerging economies that also includes India, China and South Africa, Brazil and Russia have important economic ties, especially in the fertilizer sector.
Bolsonaro several times used the factor to defend a supposed neutrality in the Ukraine War. The outgoing president even went to Moscow shortly before the Russian invasion and made speeches sympathetic to Putin, a posture later criticized by countries like the US.
The Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelensky, had also congratulated Lula, right after the second round of elections. On Twitter, he said he hoped for “active collaboration and the strengthening of the strategic partnership to ensure democracy, peace and security.”
Earlier, in an interview with TV Globo, the Ukrainian leader had criticized Bolsonaro for his neutrality in the conflict that has been going on since February. “I don’t believe anyone can remain neutral when there is war in the world,” he said at the time.
