The local authorities decided that ice soldiers sculptures would be a suitable decoration for this festive season, probably thinking that this would be a way to boost the national spirit in the run-up to the new year.
Literally, the phrase “blood-freezes” could be used by anyone passing through the main square of the Siberian city of Chita this Christmas to see a dozen armed Russian soldiers standing still…literally frozen, wearing heavy clothing and holding Kalashnikovs in hand.
Of course the reason why the soldiers don’t move a muscle is obvious. They are made of ice.
As people walk past them, they look at them. Some of them are taking selfies.
Chita is located 3,000 miles (4,830 km) east of Moscow.

Most of the citizens even seem to like this kind of decoration
“We’re at war,” Tatiana says, “so it’s only right that we have these ice soldiers here. They are current.”
“It’s an unusual way to celebrate the New Year,” comments Ludmila. “Normally you would have Santa Claus, bunnies or squirrels. But it’s a sign of the times.”
