In 18 of the countries consumption fell above the target of 15% – The biggest reduction is recorded in Finland (52.7%)
The consumption natural gas in the European Union decreased by 20.1% in space August-Novembercompared to the average of the corresponding period of the last five years, i.e. above the 15% target set by Brussels (for the period August 2022-March 2023), Eurostat announced today.
Due to the drastic reduction in Russian gas deliveries, against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, the 27 EU countries agreed at the end of July to limit on a voluntary basis consumption from 1 August 2022 to 31 March 2023. The aim was to reduce consumption by 15% compared to the previous five years.
From August to November consumption fell “in most member countries”, Eurostat said. The European statistics office did not elaborate on the reasons for this decrease, which could be partly explained by the particularly mild autumn in Europe, the efforts made by consumers or even the reduction of production in some industries.
In 18 of the countries consumption fell above the target of 15%. The biggest decrease is recorded in Finland (52.7%), Latvia (43.2%) and Lithuania (41.6%). Greece also exceeded the 15% target.
Six countries reduced consumption but did not reach the target: Ireland, Spain, Czech Republic, Portugal, Italy and Slovenia. On the contrary, in two countries, consumption increased, in Malta by 7.1% and in Slovakia by 2.6%.
Eurostat highlighted that gas consumption in the EU has remained below the average of the last five years since January.
