Afghanistan: The Taliban ban women from attending universities

Continued backsliding in Afghanistan after Taliban decide to indefinitely ban university education for women in the country

Afghanistan is sinking further into darkness as the Taliban government has banned women from attending universities.

Specifically, the Taliban ordered an indefinite ban on university education for women in the country, as the ministry of higher education said in a letter sent to all government and private universities.

“You are all hereby informed to implement the aforementioned order suspending women’s education until further notice,” said the letter signed by Higher Education Minister Neda Mohamed Nadeem.

Ministry spokesman Ziaullah Hashimi, who posted the letter on Twitter, confirmed the order in a text message to AFP.

The ban on women attending university comes less than three months after thousands of girls and women sat university entrance exams across the country, with many aspiring to study engineering and medicine in the future.

After the Taliban took over Afghanistan in August last year, universities were forced to implement new rules, including gender-segregated classrooms and entrances. Women were only allowed to be taught by female teachers or by older men.

Most teenage girls from Afghanistan are already excluded from secondary education.

Afghanistan’s education sector has been hit hard since the Taliban seized power and there has been an exodus of trained academics since US-led forces left last year.

Many of the remaining teaching staff have been unpaid for months. The US and other Western countries have made improving women’s education in Afghanistan a condition for official recognition of the Taliban government.
