Israel today added the United States to its list of countries it bans travel to, citing concerns about the spread of the Omicron strain of the new coronavirus.

Under the order, which takes effect at midnight on Tuesday, Israelis will need a special permit to travel by air to the United States, which is added to a list of more than 50 countries to which citizens of Israel.

In a televised address Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said Israel had secured time with its rapid moves to curb travel when Omicron was first spotted last month, but noted that he was now exhausted and predicted an outbreak. diseases within a few weeks.

Acting on the recommendations of the Ministry of Health, the Israeli Cabinet today voted to include the United States, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Morocco, Portugal, Canada, Switzerland and Turkey in the list of countries where travel is banned, Bennett’s office said in a statement.

Israel has recorded 134 confirmed cases of the Omicron strain and 307 suspected cases, according to the Ministry of Health. Of these, 167 were accidental, he explained.

In an initial rapid reaction in Omicron, which was first located in South Africa and Hong Kong, Israel banned foreigners from entering on November 25 and imposed a three- to fourteen-day quarantine on Israelis returning from abroad.
