Pope Francis makes appeals for Ukraine at almost every public appearance

Pope Francis today appealed to the world to remember the children in Ukraine who are suffering from the cold this Christmas.

“Let us think of the many children in Ukraine who are suffering, suffering so much, because of this war,” the pope said, speaking off-text during his weekly address at the Vatican.

The pope has made appeals for Ukraine at nearly every public appearance, usually at least twice a week, since Russia invaded its neighbor in February.

“The majority of those I have seen here cannot smile,” the pontiff said, referring to children from Ukraine who have found refuge in Rome with Italian families and charities.

“It is heavy when a child loses the ability to laugh. These children carry within themselves the tragedy of this war, so inhumane, so cruel. Let us think of the Ukrainian people this Christmas–no electricity, no heating, no necessary for its survival”.

Russia has been attacking Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since October, destroying it completely or partially.

Last week the pope appealed to us to spend less money on Christmas celebrations and presents this year and to send that money to Ukrainians to help them overcome hunger and cold this winter.

In addition, the Vatican has undertaken a crowdfunding campaign to send thermal underwear to Ukraine.
