Today’s visit to the US and the meeting with Joe Biden “will refute Russian efforts to make it appear that US-Ukraine relations are cooling,” said Mykhailo Podoliak, political adviser to the Ukrainian president.
In his first trip abroad since the outbreak of the war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet today at the White House with US President Joe Biden and then address the US Congress.
Mykhailo Podoliak, a political adviser to the Ukrainian president, called the visit “highly symbolic” and “extremely important” as it will counter Russian efforts to make it appear that US-Ukraine relations are cooling.
Zelensky’s trip, including the talks he will have with US President Joe Biden, provide an opportunity to describe and explain the real situation in Ukraine, what weapons Kyiv needs to fight Russia and the reasons why it needs them , according to Podoliak.
“Highly symbolic” but “extremely important” the visit
Zelensky travels to Washington after visiting the frontline in the city of Bakhmut on Tuesday, where some of the heaviest fighting has taken place in Ukraine since Russia’s February 24 invasion.
“Mr. Zelensky’s official visit to the US, which began immediately after his visit to the hottest spot in the war — Bahamut — is highly symbolic. And extremely important,” Podoliak said in written comments to Reuters.
“Firstly, both the visit itself and the level of planned meetings unequivocally testify to the high degree of trust between the countries. Secondly, this puts an end to the Russian side’s efforts (…) to demonstrate an alleged growing coldness in our bilateral relations,” he adds.
Russia’s description of Ukraine-US relations is “not even remotely close” to reality, he notes.
“The US categorically supports Ukraine,” he emphasizes.
Podoliak also says that Zelensky will be able to show the American political elite “the true scale” of the war, its true nature, and the importance of ending it the right way — that is, on the right terms.
Also “guns, guns and more guns. It is important to personally explain why we need certain types of weapons. In particular, armored vehicles, the latest anti-missile defense systems and long-range missiles,” he adds.
Zelensky will explain why providing Ukraine with such weapons will not lead to an escalation of the war, but will sharply reduce Russia’s military capabilities, he emphasizes.
“In my view, the visit will undoubtedly activate and improve important areas of military cooperation, further mobilize bipartisan political support, and provide a clearer picture of the future if the war is not ended the right way,” Podoliak concludes. .
