THE World Health Organisation expressed his concern about the increase in her infections Covid-19 in China and stressed that he supports the government’s decision to focus its efforts on vaccinating people at higher risk across the country, the head of the WHO said today.

THE number of infections has skyrocketed in the world’s second-largest economy and forecasts suggest China could face an explosion of infections and more than a million deaths next year.

“The WHO is very concerned about the evolving situation in China, with increasing reports of serious infections,” director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters.

Tedros stressed that the Agency needs more detailed information on the severity of the situation, hospital admissions and requirements for intensive care unit support to have a comprehensive assessment of the situation.

Earlier today, the German government confirmed that it had sent its first batch of BioNTech Covid-19 vaccines to China to initially be administered to German expatriates. This is the first non-Chinese coronavirus vaccine to be used in China.

For his part, Dr. Michael Ryan, head of the WHO’s emergencies programme, said vaccination rates in China were “inadequate” for a country of its size, but stressed that Chinese health authorities had made progress on vaccinations over the past two weeks. He urged Beijing to import more mRNA vaccines.

At the same time, the WHO official stressed that the reported cases of the disease in China may be far from the current reality, as the country struggles to collect real-time data of Covid-19.
