Videos show celebrations in Chile after Boric’s election to the presidency

by

Right after the ultra-right candidate José Antonio Kast recognized the defeat by Gabriel Boric, last Sunday night (19), supporters of the leftist rushed to the streets of the capital Santiago.

In Baquedano Square, renamed Dignidade after the wave of protests in 2019 against social inequality in the country, thousands of voters of the next president of Chile celebrated the victory with flags and battle cries, and there were even those who took their own bottle of champagne to the celebration.

With more than 4.6 million votes, Boric became the most voted presidential candidate in Chilean history, in a election that had 55% participation, a rate higher than the first round (47%) and the vote for the election of the members of the Constituent Assembly (42.5%).

Although no political force in the country has galvanized the effects of the protests of three years ago, it was the name of the Frente Amplio that took advantage, in this electoral cycle, of the unfolding of the demonstrations. Boric comes to power as the representative of a generation that was formed in the student acts of 2011 and that saw discontent with the country reach its peak in 2019.

That year, downtown Santiago, where Dignidade Square is located, was the epicenter of the Chilean social upheaval. So it was natural that the region was taken right after Boric’s election was announced.
