In the morning, the Archbishop of Athens Mr. Ieronymos and the Mayor of Athens Mr. Costas Bakogiannis visited the new Accommodation Structure of Unaccompanied Minor Refugees of AMKE “SYNYPARXIS” of the Church of Greece, in Kypseli. The structure accommodates 40 children, aged 8-16 years and its purpose is to help unaccompanied children arriving in our country, from war zones, either to join the local community learning the Greek language, or -if possible- to reconnect with their families abroad.
The Archbishop of Athens in a short speech stressed the joint effort aimed at “Coexistence” and expressed his warm thanks to Metropolitan Ilios Athenagoras who has taken care of the children of the structure as well as to the Mayor of Athens for the practical and ongoing interest. of him: “The Church has no meaning outside of the life of Man. If he were not human, he would not need the Church. The Church aims to help Man, any human being, the creation of God. That is why he invites collaborators in this project, those who are in a good mood. Our mayor, as well as other mayors and other actors, has this good mood and we are doing this work together, the divinely inspired I would say. That is why the meaning of the name we gave to this effort is very successful. We said “Coexistence”, we all live together. Today, that is what we want. To greet, our love for man. That’s what they say at Christmas, that’s what we mean, and that’s what we try to do. ” The Archbishop concluded with the wish for “a more beautiful, more understandable society, a society of love”.
For his part, the Mayor of Athens, after expressing his gratitude to the person of Archbishop Ieronymos who with his actions “inspires and gives strength”, said: “It is not just an obligation, but our moral duty to support the efforts of the Church of Greece , which puts the unaccompanied refugee children under its roof. The model structure on Thiras Street is a house, an act of love, created with care and caring. The message against hatred, racism and discrimination could not be stronger “, said Mr. Bakoyannis and addressing the Archbishop, stressed:” You can be sure that the Municipality of Athens will continue to support it by any means the effort, but also all the next ones “.
The General Director of AMKE “Synparxis”, Archimandrite Panteleimon Papasynnefakis noted that the structure is inspired by the Archbishop’s vision not to create hotel spaces, but houses for these children, to open our arms and show that people love and solidarity. Besides, the Church of Greece is doing this. ” He also referred to the work and actions of the structure and underlined: “We try to help these children, so that they regain their hope.”
At the same time, Fr. Panteleimon announced that the structure accommodates forty children aged 8 to 16 years, while doctors, pediatricians, interpreters and social workers work and collaborate. He spoke about the support and assistance of the Municipality of Athens and thanked Mr. Bakoyannis and his associates for their contribution.
