Articles on the Guardian’s website were still being published on Wednesday afternoon and the management said it was confident the paper would be published as normal on Thursday
THE British newspaper Guardian announced on Wednesday that it was the victim of a cyber attack, apparently due to malware, but without – so far at least – hampering the publication of articles on its website or preparations for the publication of the daily paper.
Management asked employees to work remotely until the end of the week, pending resolution of identified issues.
“A serious incident has affected our network and IT systems in the last 24 hours,” chief executive Anna Bateson said in a message to staff. “We believe it’s a malware attack, but we’re still looking at all possibilities,” he adds.
Articles on the Guardian’s website were still being published on Wednesday afternoon, and management said it was confident the newspaper will be released normally on Thursday.
Using malware, hackers break into computer networks and lock or encrypt data, with the intention of then demanding a ransom – most often in cryptocurrency.
