The amendment on the taxation of surplus profits in refineries “aims to protect the surplus profits themselves”, says SYRIZA in its statement
“After the “gift” of 1.8 billion euros in excess profits to the electricity producers, Mr. Mitsotakis is now giving an additional billion euros in excess profits to the refineries”, says the SYRIZA PS in a statement, arguing that in the government’s amendment for financial aid to consumers , “Mr. Mitsotakis is attempting yet another provocative gratuitous arrangement for the benefit of the refineries’ surplus profits, at a time when society has been groaning for 15 months from the obscene profit”.
In particular, it states that the amendment on the taxation of surplus profits in refineries “aims to protect the surplus profits themselves” and more specifically that Mr. Mitsotakis:
-It christens the extraordinary levy an “expense”, which is deductible from income tax, effectively sparing companies a part of the tax burden they would normally have.
– He applies a rate of 33% to the taxation of the surplus profits of refineries at the lowest rate allowed by the EU, instead of 90% that he himself had announced that he would impose on power producers.
– It does not intentionally extend the extraordinary levy to 2023, while, based on the Regulation, it can and must apply a solidarity contribution for 2023 as well.”
SYRIZA-PS emphasizes in its announcement that it is committed that “the next progressive government, which will prioritize the interest of the social majority, will tax fairly and return to the citizens the excess profits that have been generated on their backs”.
