Until the end of time, a sparkling eye on Plaza de Canalejas of Madrid will look at passers-by passing under its blue-red “roof” and the sky above. “Like the image of a distant galaxy” comments the team of the Brut Deluxe design studio on the site-specific installation that bears the name “IRIS”.
The studio hung more than 100,000 LEDs forming a net of colors nine meters above the ground. With a diameter of 50 meters, from above the installation looks like a crater but once the drone gets closer, the artwork comes to life as the light becomes more intense and as it pulsates it adds realistic details.
The installation spreads over an area of more than 2,000 square meters, while the total length of the cables with the LEDs amounts to two kilometers. In addition, two “spheres” in the installation are each one meter in diameter and constantly change color. Studio Brut Deluxe specified that the energy consumption of the 102,600 LEDs of the ‘IRIS’ is only 2.1 kilowatts per hour.
