“The situation on the front line has stabilized, with the greatest efforts of Russian troops focused on liberating the territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic”
Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov said today that the front line in Ukraine is stable and that Russia has concentrated its forces to “complete the liberation” of the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine.
In a year-end message to foreign military followers and released by the Defense Ministry, Russia’s top military official said: “The situation on the front line has stabilized, with the greatest efforts of Russian troops to focus on liberating the territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic.”
Russia, after its retreat from Kyiv in April, has set among its war aims full control of the eastern Donbass region, which consists of Donetsk along with neighboring Luhansk.
Russian forces control almost all of the Luhansk region, but only 60% of the Donetsk region. Since August they have been locked in a costly and protracted battle for the city of Bakhmut, an industrial city in Donetsk whose pre-war population was around 70,000.
