The election of a new Archbishop will take place after Saturday’s Divine Liturgy and the decision to hold the election on Christmas Eve was unanimous

On Christmas Eve, December 24, the Holy Synod appointed the election of the new Primate of the Church of Cyprus.

The election of a new Archbishop will take place after the Divine Liturgy on Saturday and the decision to hold the election on Christmas Eve was unanimous.

In his statements, Metropolitan George of Paphos, Custodian of the Archbishop’s Throne, said that the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus met today Thursday in a session, under the chairmanship of the Custodian of the Archbishop’s Throne and examined the two objections that had been submitted for the Archbishop’s Elections, the which he rejected.

He also stated that he validated the results of the elections for the election of the new Archbishop of Cyprus that took place on Sunday, December 18, 2022, as well as the three candidates nominated by the people for the election of the new Archbishop of Cyprus.

He noted that the triumvirate consists of Metropolitan Georgios of Paphos, Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol and Metropolitan Isaia of Tamasos.

He said, at the same time, that the Holy Synod determined that the election of the Archbishop of Nea Iustianiana and all of Cyprus will take place on Saturday, December 24, 2022, Christmas Eve, after the Divine Liturgy, and that the message of the election will follow in the old cathedral of St. John the Theologian Nicosia.

When asked how many votes it was decided to hold the election of the new Archbishop on Saturday, the Metropolitan of Paphos said that it was decided unanimously.
