India will randomly test 2% of tourists arriving at its airports to curb the spread of the coronavirus, the country’s health minister has said.
As the number of coronavirus cases in China increases at a rapid pace, India’s health minister has advised citizens to be extra cautious by taking appropriate protective measures such as wearing masks and continuing to get vaccinated amid fears of a new variant.
Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya told parliament on Thursday that India will conduct random tests on 2% of tourists arriving at its airports to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
“States are trying to sensitize people by asking them to wear masks, use hand sanitizers, observe respiratory hygiene and social distancing,” Mandaviya said, as he encouraged Indians to get vaccinated.
India eased its Covid-19 restrictions earlier this year after cases declined and people have mostly stopped wearing masks outdoors.
The warnings come as China prepares for a further spread of infections after its hasty exit from the zero-Covid strategy.
Yesterday, Wednesday, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed his concern about the increasing cases in China, stressing that he is concerned about “increasing reports of serious diseases”.
