In the Arctic is there a risk of the next “heat episode”? Satellite images show Russia expanding its military infrastructure at Arctic bases, with runways and radar systems capable of detecting stealth aircraft – while NATO strengthens its own forces in the region

While the war in Ukraine rages on, draining vital resources and manpower from Russia, Vladimir Putin’s forces continue to relentlessly fortify military expansion in the Arctic.

Russia is building a number of radar systems that appear to have the ability to detect stealth aircraft.

NATO, however, is increasing its presence in the region in response to Russian militarization. Speaking to CNN, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg spoke of a “significant Russian military build-up”.

The satellite images they do not show extensive expansionbut suggest that Putin’s forces are continuing to fortify and militarize the region as part of their plans.

With the ongoing war in Ukraine already straining Russian resources, expansion into the Arctic north appears to be key to Putin’s long-term military strategy, analysts say.

The images show the ongoing construction of radar stations in Olenegorsk in northwestern Russia, about 100 miles from the Finnish border, and on the Kola Peninsula, 100 miles to the east. Similar work is being done at a base in Vorkuta, near the country’s northern coast, above the Arctic Circle. It also appears that Russia is building specialized radars Rezonans-N.

Russian officials claim that this particular radar system is capable of detecting stealth aircraft. The radars are built in the western Russian town of Ostronoi on the Barents Sea coast, 250 miles from the Finnish-Norwegian border. In addition to radars, Putin’s forces have bolstered their aircraft infrastructure with work on airstrips such as the Nagurskoye Air Base on Russian islands located in the Arctic Ocean. Similar work on runways was carried out at the military base on Kotelny Island off the coast of northeastern mainland Russia.
