China considers Taiwan its own territory and believes that the US is slowly eating away its core interests
The United States must stop suppressing China’s development and must not continue its “old routine of unilateral intimidation,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his US counterpart Anthony Blinken.
In the latest phone call between the two officials, Wang said the US should pay attention to China’s legitimate concerns, stop restraining and suppressing its development, and not constantly question China’s red line by “slamming” it. It referred to the tactic of using a series of small actions to achieve a much wider effect, which would be difficult to achieve with a single extended action.
Wang’s comments highlight Chinese President Xi Jinping’s meeting with US President Joe Biden last month at the Group of Twenty (G20) summit in Bali, where they discussed a number of issues, including Taiwan. It was their first face-to-face conversation since 2017.
China regards Taiwan as its territory and believes the US is slowly eating away at its core interests while being careful to avoid any drastic action that could give China a clear reason to respond with full force.
Biden has objected to China’s “coercive and increasingly aggressive actions against Taiwan,” which he said undermine peace and security in the Taiwan Strait and the wider region and endanger global prosperity.
Xi Jinping called Taiwan China’s “first red line” that should not be violated.
In his telephone conversation with Blinken, Wang stressed that the two sides should focus on translating into practical policies and concrete actions the consensus of the two leaders in Bali, according to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry today.
“It is necessary to intensify consultations regarding the guiding principles in China-US relations, promote dialogue at all levels, and resolve specific issues between the two countries through joint working groups,” Wang said.
