THE Russia criticized her European Union ebecause it granted candidate country status to Bosnia, saying today that this move by the EU is part of the West’s attempt to impose its policies on the countries of the Western Balkans.

Last week EU leaders agreed to formally give Bosnia the status of a candidate country for joining the European bloc.

“In the context of the current situation in the world and the expansionist line of the West, it is clear that this decision was primarily motivated by the goal of the complete geopolitical conquest of the region,” said the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry. Maria Zakharovaaccording to a statement released by the Russian embassy in Bosnia.

According to Zakharova, the EU used the accession talks to force Balkan countries to “automatically” adopt her foreign policy and sanctions decisions, according to the statement.

Russia has also lobbied to close the office of the international peace monitor in Bosnia, encouraging Bosnian Serb separatists to defy the envoy’s rulings.

“We intend to continue working with the goal of liberating sovereign and independent Bosnia and Herzegovina from the obsolete protectorate regime,” the statement said.

While Russia has warned that it would regard as “hostile action” any steps Bosnia might take to join NATO, it has so far not criticized its European ambitions.
