The Cessna 150 private plane crashed on a California beach, killing former Santa Monica Mayor Rex Minter, it was announced Friday. According to unconfirmed information, the pilot of the aircraft, whose details have not been made public, is also dead.

The accident happened late Thursday afternoon (local time) at Santa Monica Beach, where several visitors were at the time.

The moment of the crash was captured on amateur video shared by social media users. It shows the ill-fated Cessna flying low and crashing onto the beach as bystanders watch.
A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the pilot “reported engine failure shortly after takeoff from Santa Monica Airport.”
“My friend saw the plane flying very low and he was freaked out,” Josh Feinberg told ABC 7. “We thought it was going to land smoothly, but it hit the water and flipped over. It was very scary,” he added.
Santa Monica Beach is a tourist attraction. It is estimated that the historic wooden pier attracts around nine million visitors each year.
