Lula prepares to announce Jean Paul Prates as president of Petrobras

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) invited Senator Jean Paul Prates (PT-RN) to assume the presidency of Petrobras and intends to announce it next week.

The idea is to disclose the name with the next batch of ministers, which should take place on Tuesday (27).

The parliamentarian was one of the coordinators of the technical group of Mines and Energy of the transition cabinet.

PT members say that there is no legal impediment for him to occupy the post – that is, it would not be necessary to change the State Law for the nomination to take place.

Petrobras’ statute includes a restriction on members of political campaigns. As shown to Sheet, state-owned experts and advisers do not yet have an assessment on possible restrictions on the name of Prates.

The senator sought to formally distance himself from Lula’s campaign and did not assume coordination functions in the process. He helped with policy discussions for the area during the formulation of the government plan.

Economist and social scientist William Nozaki, who was part of the transition cabinet’s Mines and Energy working group, is cited as one of those being considered for a Petrobras board.

With Prates going to the state-owned company, Senator Alexandre Silveira (PSD-MG) is the most quoted for the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

The folder would initially contemplate the MDB. The party’s bench in the Senate, however, gave up the nomination for the PSD.

During the transition, the future indicated for Petrobras defended the creation of some mechanism that would serve as a “cushioning cushion” for fluctuations in fuel prices. Prates also added that the fuel price policy is “from the government”, not from Petrobras.

“Who defines price policy for anything in the country, whether it will intervene or not, whether it will be free or not, whether it will be international or not, is the government. What is wrong and we have to undo it once and for all all is to say that Petrobras defines fuel price policy. It will not be like that. Will it follow the government policy? Of course”, he said.

Prates also said that Petrobras’ new board should review the dividend distribution policy.
