Madagascar: At least 17 dead and 60 missing from shipwreck

by

At least 17 people have been killed in the wreck of a cargo ship off Madagascar this morning and investigations are continuing to find another 60 missing, local port authorities say.

The ship was carrying 130 people and 45 have been rescued so far, according to Capt. Jean-Edmond Randrianandenaine, director general of the Seaport and River Services (APMF). “Investigations are ongoing for the others,” he added.

The ship was not allowed to carry passengers, but boarded them and set sail from Adana.

It is a wooden cargo-type cargo ship bound for Soaneirana-Iwongo, about 100 km south. An APMF spokesman in the city said that at the first sign, he had a problem with his engine. “He was left stranded by the waves and excelled on a reef,” explained Adrian Fabrice Ratsimbazafi.

A team of police officers is heading to the scene of the wreck and the authorities have already started the criminal investigation of the accident. Many locals are involved in the search for the wrecks.
