At least five people were killed and 35 others were injured in the city of Kherson, Ukraine, during a Russian attack on Saturday morning (24), President Volodymyr Zelensky said.
Photos shared by the leader on Telegram show burning cars and civilian bodies on the streets of the city, which was taken by Moscow troops early in the conflict and retaken by Kiev in November.
“Social networks will probably mark the photos as sensitive content, but this is not sensitive content: this is just real life for Ukrainians,” wrote Zelensky, who was in the US this week on his first trip to another country since the start of War in February.
“The terrorist country [referindo-se à Rússia] continues to bomb the civilian population. These are not military installations; this is not a war with rules. It’s terror, it’s killing to intimidate and for pleasure.”
Presidential adviser Kirilo Timochenko, shortly afterwards, said that at least 16 of the 35 wounded were in serious condition. The Kremlin has not commented on Kiev’s allegations so far.
Correspondents for the AFP news agency in the city reported that shelling hit the central market and nearby streets. The place is usually very busy, especially on weekends.
Kherson has also been the target of several Russian bombings in recent weeks, particularly against electricity installations. In the early afternoon local time, AFP reported, it was still possible to hear shelling in other parts of the region.
