Canada: Schools, bars, gyms and casinos close in Quebec – No spectators

by

Quebec, Canada’s second most populous province, will close bars, gyms and casinos and make teleworking mandatory from today to tackle the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.

Health Minister Christian Dub said the province had a record number of cases, about 4,500 daily, and called on citizens to cut short their personal contacts as the Christmas holidays approached. The measures will be implemented at 5 in the afternoon, local time (midnight tonight, Greek time).

“The situation is critical; we are currently waging a war on the virus,” Dubb said, noting that the health system was particularly fragile.

Most schools are closed from today until January 10. Restaurants will only be allowed to operate for five hours daily (17.00-22.00) while all matches will be played in camera.

On Friday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trindade said the increase in Omicron cases in the country was causing “fear” while the Canadian chief warned that the health system could quickly become overloaded.
