Moscow is ready to resume natural gas deliveries to Europe through the Yamal pipeline, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak told the TASS news agency on Sunday.
“The European market remains in the news as natural gas shortages continue and we have an opportunity to resume deliveries,” he said, citing in particular the Yamal pipeline whose operation “was stopped for political reasons and remains unused.”
The pipeline’s flow to the West had been reversed since December 2021, as Poland rejected buying natural gas from Russia and resorted to reserves held in Germany.
The epilogue to the contract between Poland and Russia was written in May, after Warsaw earlier rejected Moscow’s demand to pay in rubles.
Russian energy giant Gazprom cut off supplies, saying it was no longer able to export natural gas through Poland after Moscow imposed sanctions on the company that runs the Polish section of the Yamal pipeline.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak also said that Moscow is considering deliveries of larger quantities of natural gas through Turkey, following the creation of an energy hub there.
Referring to liquefied natural gas (LNG) deliveries, Novak said that Moscow estimates to have supplied Europe with 21 billion cubic meters (bcm) in 2022. “This year we have managed to significantly increase LNG deliveries to Europe,” he said and clarified that until at the end of November they were estimated at 19.4 bcm, while by the New Year it is estimated that they will rise to 21 bcm.
