This is 26-year-old Islam Farooq, who allegedly acted alone
Israeli authorities today announced the arrest of a Palestinian accused of the November 23 double bombing in Jerusalem.
Israeli police and the Shin Bet internal security agency said in a joint press release that the suspect was arrested a month ago, “six days after the twin bombings” that killed two Israelis and injured 17 others.
This is 26-year-old Islam Farooq, who allegedly acted alone, motivated by an ideology inspired by the activities of the Islamic State jihadist organization, the press release of the Israeli authorities said.
The first explosive device was detonated at a busy rush hour bus stop on the outskirts of Jerusalem. A second bomb exploded about 30 minutes later at a bus stop in a nearby Jewish settlement. According to the indictment, Farooq planted the explosive devices an hour before detonating them via cellphone.
Outgoing Prime Minister Yair Lapid commented that Israeli authorities “will track down every terrorist who launches attacks against our citizens” and bring them to justice to account for their crimes.
The double bombing of bus stops came at a time of escalating tensions between Israelis and Palestinians, in which the Israeli military has stepped up operations in the occupied West Bank.
