Former Spice Girl Mel C cancels show in Poland: ‘They don’t align with the communities I support’

Singer Mel C, best known for being part of the Spice Girls, has canceled a performance in Poland on New Year’s Eve because of “issues that do not align with the communities she supports”.

She used her Twitter profile to make the statement and did not provide further details. “I hope to be back there very soon. Hope everyone is having a wonderful Christmas and all the best in 2023,” she wrote herself as well.

Despite not specifying what the questions are, many have assumed that it refers to the LGBTQIA+ community. The show was organized by public broadcaster TVP, which, according to US magazine Deadline, was recently accused of promoting discrimination against this community.

Mel C is an open advocate for LGBTQIA+ and other minority rights. She was the main international attraction of the 23rd edition of the São Paulo LGBT Pride Parade, in 2019.

Among the members of the European Union, Poland is the country with the lowest ranking in the rights of the LGBTQIA+ population. The survey is carried out annually by the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association.

Some regions of the country have even tried to seek the status of an “LGBTQIA+ ideology-free zone”. Poland was threatened by the European Union with cuts in financial transfers due to violations of minority rights.
