by

The Colombian National Institutes of Health has confirmed the first three cases of the Omicron variant of the new coronavirus, the Andean Ministry of Health announced on Monday.

They are residents of the coastal cities of Cartagena and Santa Marta.

Two of the infected people had visited the United States and the third had visited Spain, said Colombian Health Minister Fernando Ruiz.

The Panamanian Ministry of Health announced on Monday that the first case of the Omicron variant of the new coronavirus was detected, while in neighboring Costa Rica, three more confirmed cases of it were recorded.

According to Panamanian Health Minister Luis Francisco Sucre, the infected man is in his fifties, working in the mining sector and recently traveled to South Africa. He is a foreigner but lives permanently in the Central American state. He has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and when he arrived by air on December 8, he also had an antigen test for the new coronavirus “with a negative result”, Mr. Sucre clarified. He has been isolated and is asymptomatic.

Panamanian health authorities are trying to determine if six people who came in contact with the person during the trip may also have been infected with the new variant of SARS-CoV-2, which is spreading like wildfire worldwide.

In Costa Rica, health authorities reported three more cases of Omicron; one child and two adults were infected.

The first case was detected at the weekend.
