by

Tonight, a meeting of the Serb crisis committee will be held in northern Kosovo where it will be decided whether the roadblocks will be withdrawn.

The head of the Office for Kosovo in the Government of Serbia, Petar Petkovicstated that the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic asked the Serbs in northern Kosovo to withdraw the roadblocks.

Petkovic said that the EU-US joint statement fully covers the Serbian side and provides guarantees for the protection of the Serbian population in Kosovo.

Aleksandar Vucic met today late afternoon with the political representatives of the Serbs of Kosovo who were briefed on the content of the EU-US joint statement and suggested they end road blockades. At this meeting most of the representatives of the Serbs opposed the withdrawal of the barricades, pointing out that they do not trust the government of Kosovo. Tonight a meeting will be held in northern Kosovo of the Serb crisis committee where it will be decided whether to withdraw the barricades.

The president of Serbia flies by helicopter to the administrative border with Kosovo to meet with representatives of the Serbs. It is noted that in a joint statement of the EU and the US published this afternoon, both sides request to show restraint and to avoid actions that will lead to an escalation of tension. Brussels and Washington provide guarantees to respect the rights and protection of Serbs and all minorities in Kosovo.

Serb roadblocks in northern Kosovo remain for the 19th day. The judicial authorities of Kosovo decided today to convert the pre-trial detention of former police officer Dejan Padic into house arrest. Dejan Padic was arrested on December 10 on suspicion of terrorist activity and was remanded in custody. His temporary release pending trial was one of the demands of the Serbs to remove the barricades. The other demands include the release of two other arrested Serbs and the withdrawal of Kosovo police special forces from the majority-Serb north.
