Israel: Netanyahu will promote West Bank settlement

by

“The Jewish people have an exclusive and inalienable right to all parts of the Land of Israel. The government will encourage and promote settlement (…) in the Galilee, Negev, Golan, Judea and Samaria,” a press release said.

Ahead of the inauguration of Israel’s new government tomorrow, Acting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today presented the highlights of its program, which emphasizes the expansion of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank.

“The Jewish people have an exclusive and inalienable right to all parts of the Land of Israel. The government will encourage and promote settlement (…) in the Galilee, Negev, Golan, Judea and Samaria,” said a press release issued by Likud (Netanyahu’s party) after reaching an agreement with ultra-orthodox Jewish and far-right parties for the formation of a government.

The term “Judea and Samaria” is used in Israeli documents to describe the West Bank.

Likud’s press release also refers to demands by its far-right partners that security forces be given greater latitude to use force in the occupied West Bank. The government will strengthen the security forces and support them in their fight against terrorism, it is underlined.

Netanyahu also announced today the selection of Yoav Gallad for the post of Defense Minister. The 64-year-old general e.a. Netanyahu had also trusted previous government schemes. The son of Polish Jews who survived the Holocaust, Yoav Gallad had a long career in the Armed Forces and was a military attache to former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

Likud has announced that it is nominating Amir Ohana, who in 2019 became the first Israeli minister to publicly come out as gay, as Knesset speaker.
