The fire broke out at around 23:30 (local time; yesterday Wednesday at 18:30 Greek time) at the Grand Diamond City Hotel and Casino

“About” ten people died overnight Wednesday-Thursday when a fire broke out at a hotel and casino in Paoipet (west), a city on Cambodia’s border with Thailand, Cambodian police said.

The fire, which broke out at around 23:30 (local time; yesterday Wednesday at 18:30 Greek time) at the Grand Diamond City Hotel and Casino, killed “about ten people” and injured “thirty” “, according to a still preliminary account in a police report consulted by AFP.

Footage uploaded to social media sites showed the imposing building in flames.

Injured people were taken to hospitals in the neighboring Thai province of Sa Keo, a source close to Thailand’s foreign ministry said.

“The authorities are trying to bring the fire under control, with the help of fire engines rushed from Thailand,” according to the same source.

A member of a Thai first-aid team working on the scene told AFP that the fire spread very quickly in the multi-story hotel and casino, especially due to the fact that the floors are carpeted.

Some 400 people work at Grand Diamond City, according to Cambodian police.

At least one of the victims is a Thai national, while 32 injured have been admitted to hospitals there, according to information given to the Reuters news agency by a top official of the local government of Thailand’s Sa Keo province.

Many foreigners were inside the hotel and casino when the fire broke out, local media reported earlier.

In Paoipet, a popular destination for gambling enthusiasts, there are many casinos that attract mainly Thais who want to gamble legally — casinos are banned in Thailand.

In recent months, there have been several fires in nightclubs, mainly attributed to the fact that even basic safety rules were not followed, in Southeast Asian countries.

In August, a fire at a discotheque near Pattaya, Thailand, killed 26 people, mostly young people who had gone to celebrate.

In September, 32 people died when a fire broke out at a karaoke bar in a suburb of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
