ECDC: Mandatory coronavirus tests for passengers arriving from China to EU ‘unjustified’

EU countries “have relatively high levels of immunization and vaccination” and “the variants circulating in China are already circulating in the EU,” it said in its statement.

The introduction of mandatory testing for Covid-19 in the European Union for passengers arriving from China – where the number of cases has skyrocketed – is “unjustified”, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has said.

EU countries “have relatively high levels of immunization and vaccination” and “the variants circulating in China are already circulating in the EU,” the agency said in a statement, explaining that the mandatory testing measure is not necessary across the EU.

For the ECDC, “the potential infections” that may be introduced are “relatively limited” compared to the number of those already circulating daily. Additionally, health systems “are now able to manage” the disease.

Many countries, including Italy, Japan and the US, have already imposed mandatory tests on all travelers arriving from China.

The abrupt end to China’s so-called “zero Covid policy” and the resumption of overseas travel comes at a time when the country is facing the world’s biggest wave of infections.
