Stoltenberg: Appeal to send more weapons to Ukraine

“It may sound paradoxical, but military support to Ukraine is the fastest way to peace,” the NATO Secretary General said during an interview with the German Agency.

The Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Jens Stoltenberg, called on Thursday to increase arms deliveries to Ukraine.

“It may sound paradoxical, but military support to Ukraine is the fastest way to peace,” the Norwegian said during an interview with the German Agency.

For the NATO Secretary General, Russian President Vladimir Putin must be convinced that he cannot achieve the goal of bringing Ukraine under his control.

Then, Mr. Stoltenberg argued, there can be a “peaceful, negotiated settlement that will guarantee that Ukraine prevails as an independent democratic state.”

For the head of NATO, Ukraine’s recent attacks against military targets in Russia are perfectly legal. “Every country has the right to defend itself, including Ukraine,” he said.

Ukrainian businesses must be seen in context, he explained, referring to massive Russian strikes against civilian infrastructure to cut off power, heating and water networks in the middle of winter.

On whether to approve the sending of medium-range missiles to Ukraine, Mr. Stoltenberg said that “a dialogue between the allies and with Ukraine about the specific systems” is underway.

He reminded that Ukraine has been given weapons systems that have a long range, such as HIMARS multiple missile launchers, cannons and UAVs.
