The former kickboxer was banned from Twitter in 2017 for his misogynistic views and hate speech, but was reinstated last month
The controversial influencer, Andrew Tatewas arrested in Romania on suspicion of human trafficking, rape and forming a criminal organization, prosecutors confirmed.
The 36-year-old British-American and his brother were arrested on Thursday night and are being held for 24 hours along with two Romanian suspects, the country’s prosecutors said.
“The four suspects appear to have formed an organized crime group with the aim of exploiting women by forcing them to create pornographic content, which was intended to be displayed on specialized websites for a fee,” prosecutors said. “They would make significant amounts of money.”
The brothers, who have been under criminal investigation since April, declined to comment, but their lawyer confirmed they had been taken into custody. Prosecutors said they had identified six people who had been sexually exploited.
Tate, a former kickboxer, was banned from Twitter in 2017 for his misogynistic views and hate speech, but was reinstated last month.
He still has a presence on other social media platforms, on TikTok, for example, he has been banned from having an account, but content posted with the “hashtag Andrew Tate” has been viewed billions of times. He first rose to prominence in 2016 when he was fired from a popular reality show after a video surfaced showing him assaulting a woman with a belt. He claimed that the video was edited.
He has also made the outrageous claim that rape victims “bear some responsibility for the assault they receive” and has described women as the “property” of men.
He has also described how he would violently attack a woman who accuses him of infidelity, saying he would “pull out a knife, hit her in the face and grab her by the throat”.
Therefore, concerns have been raised about its influence on young people, especially young children.
Tate has denied holding misogynistic views and accused his critics of “twisting the facts”, although he has also described himself as the “king of toxic masculinity”.
During the week, Andrew Tate clashed with climate activist Greta Thunberg on Twitter when he shared a photo of himself standing next to a Bugatti and saying he owns 33 cars.
“Please provide your email address so I can send you a complete catalog of my car collection and their respective massive emissions,” he tweeted, tagging Thunberg.
Thunberg responded by saying: “Yes, please enlighten me,” adding a fake email address that mocked him and ended with the words “getalife.com.”
Hello @GretaThunberg
I have 33 cars.
My Bugatti has a w16 8.0L quad turbo.
My TWO Ferrari 812 competizione have 6.5L v12s.
