This attack targeted buses transporting workers to the Al Taym oil field in Deir Ezzor
The death toll from the Islamic State attack on an oil well in eastern Syria has risen to twelve, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
This attack targeted buses transporting workers to the Al Taim oil field in Deir Ezzora desert area where the jihadists retreated after being driven from their strongholds in Syria in 2019.
“Bombs exploded as the buses passed, which then came under fire,” Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said.
Earlier, the Syrian agency SANA reported that ten workers were killed and at least two were injured.
According to Syria’s oil minister, Bassam Tome, one of the buses was hit by a rocket.
In December 2021, IS launched a similar attack, killing ten workers at the Al Harata oil facilities, southeast of Deir Ezzor.
Many jihadists fled to the badia (desert) that stretches from Homs province to the Iraqi border. Since the beginning of December, IS has increased its attacks in Badia, mainly targeting regime forces and pro-Iranian organizations. In these attacks, 37 military personnel, two jihadists and one civilian have been killed, according to the Observatory.
