Venezuela: The opposition voted to abolish the “transitional presidency” of Juan Guaido

by

By a vote of 72 to 29 with 8 abstentions, the opposition voted to abolish the “presidency” and the transitional government, which in fact had no power. However, they controlled the country’s assets abroad.

Venezuela’s opposition put an end to the “transitional presidency” of Juan Guaido, who had declared himself president of the country in January 2019.

The opposition and part of the international community did not recognize the re-election of Nicolas Maduro to the presidency in the 2018 elections.

MPs in the previous parliament, elected in 2015 and controlled by the opposition, voted by a vote of 72 to 29 with 8 abstentions to abolish the “presidency” and the transitional government, which effectively had no power. However, they controlled the country’s assets abroad.

The 2015 parliament is seeking to continue in office, claiming that the 2020 parliamentary elections, which Maduro won, were rigged.
