Iran’s diplomacy summons Italy’s ambassador

by

In a press release that it published, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs speaks of “intrusive statements and actions of Italian officials” but also of their interference “in the internal affairs” of Iran.

Iran summoned Italy’s ambassador — reciprocating Rome’s gesture earlier this week to protest Tehran’s handling of protests sparked by the death of Mahsha Amini on September 16 after she was arrested by police morals.

The 22-year-old Iranian woman of Kurdish origin was arrested for allegedly violating the strict dress code imposed on women in the Islamic Republic.

Iranian officials say hundreds of people have been killed, including members of law enforcement, and thousands arrested in the mass protests and subsequent incidents.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a press release that Italian Ambassador Giuseppe Perrone was summoned to protest “against the continuation of invasive statements and actions by some Italian officials”, their interference “in the internal affairs” of Iran. He described the positions of Italian officials as “negative” and “absurd”.

“Selective approaches, double standards when it comes to human rights are (practices) completely unacceptable and rejected by the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the press release added.

Iran’s foreign ministry has summoned more than ten ambassadors from Western countries, including those of Britain, France and Germany, after the protests broke out.

On Tuesday, Italy summoned the Iranian ambassador to protest the “unacceptable” response of Iranian security forces to the mass protests.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has described the situation in Iran as “unacceptable”, has spoken of a “shame” and has emphasized that Rome has decided to adopt a “hard line” in the defense of women’s rights.

The Iranian authorities mainly accuse the USA, their sworn enemy, but also some European countries of trying to incite what they describe as “riots” with the ultimate goal of regime change.
