Moscow’s defense chief, in his video message for the New Year, said the situation on the front line remains “difficult” and criticized Ukraine and the West for trying to contain Russia.
Russia’s victory over Ukraine is “inevitable,” Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said as he praised the heroism of Russian soldiers during a video New Year’s message.
Moscow’s defense chief, who has been heavily criticized by pro-war voices in Russia for battlefield failures during the 10-month war in Ukraine, said the situation on the frontline remained “difficult” and criticized Ukraine and the West for they are trying to contain Russia.
“We are entering the new year in a difficult military-political situation,” Shoigu said, according to Reuters. “This is a time when there are those who try to erase our glorious history and great achievements, tear down monuments to the victors of fascism, put war criminals on a pedestal, invalidate and desecrate everything Russian.”
With bloody fighting continuing at the front and Russia failing to secure the territory it has desired since the first months of the war, Shoigu told Russian soldiers: “Victory, like the new year, is inevitable.”
