“His strong calls for solidarity with marginalized people everywhere and his calls to reduce the widening gap between rich and poor are more relevant than ever,” the UN chief said.
The Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres paid tribute to the memory of former Pope Benedict XVI, who died today aged 95, singling out his “unwavering commitment to non-violence and peace” in a statement.
“His strong calls for solidarity with marginalized people everywhere and his calls to reduce the widening gap between rich and poor are more relevant than ever,” the UN chief said.
For his part, the United Kingdom’s King Charles III today hailed Pope Benedict XVI’s “continuous efforts” for peace and rapprochement between Catholics and Protestants, saying he was informed of the news of his death with “deep sadness.”
“I also remember his constant efforts to promote peace and goodwill among all peoples and to strengthen the relationship between the worldwide Anglican Communion and the Roman Catholic Church,” he said.
