Among the rescued are 94 foreigners of various nationalities and the rest are Tunisians
Tunisian naval forces have rescued 108 migrants who were at risk of drowning after the boat they boarded in hopes of reaching Europe sank, an official said Sunday.
Among those rescued are 94 foreigners of various nationalities and the rest are Tunisians, explained the representative of the Tunisian National Guard, Hossemedin Jbabli.
The spokesman added that they prevented six attempts to set sail with irregular migrants on New Year’s Eve.
The number of migrants trying to make the extremely dangerous crossing from the coasts of north African countries to Italy has been increasing in recent months.
According to the non-governmental organization Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights, some 18,000 migrants arrived from Tunisia in Italy in 2022, while at least 580 others died trying.
