At least 14 dead and 13 injured in armed raid on Ciudad Juarez prison, where members of the notorious Sinaloa and Juarez cartels are held
At least 14 people, including 10 guards, were killed and 13 wounded yesterday, Sunday, in a raid by gunmen against a prison in Ciudad Juarez, on the border with the US, during which at least 24 prisoners escaped,
The raid took place at dawn on New Year’s Day, when gunmen arrived in armored vehicles and opened fire on the guards, in order to facilitate the escape of prisoners.
According to Mexican media, some inmates rioted in the prison, set fire to various objects and clashed with guards.
The shots caused panic in the residents of the area where the prison is located, while the mayor asked the citizens not to approach the area.
At the same time, families of inmates waiting outside the prison to visit relatives on New Year’s Day were anxiously awaiting news about their loved ones.
The prosecution reported that the security forces managed to bring the situation in the penitentiary under control about five hours after the attack and 5 arrests were made.

In this prison in northern Mexico, members of the notorious Sinaloa and Juarez cartels, who have been at war for control of the city for over fifteen years, are being held.
The same prison has become the scene of clashes between inmates and riots, one of which left twenty dead in March 2009. It was one of the deadliest in the country’s history.
