One by one, more and more US states are adopting a new burial option: human composting.

As… macabre as it sounds, even for the most open-minded or even atheist, corpse composting and turning human remains into organic soil (fertilizer) is considered a popular alternative in the US.

Proponents of the method say that composting the dead is more environmentally friendly than “classic” coffin burials and cremation when in fact it is not very different from many cultures’ traditional practices of returning a body to the ground.

Recently, the governor of New York signed a bill that provides for “natural organic reduction” (or turning the dead body into soil) and the law will go into effect in 2027.

In addition to California, other states that have approved composting of the dead are Washington, Colorado, Oregon and Vermont, and California.

How it’s done The dead body is placed in a reusable container, along with plant material such as sawdust and straw – the most suitable organic matter for the microbial decomposition process to begin. The corpse decomposes in about a month, and at the end of the process, just under a cubic meter of nutrient-rich soil is produced, which can be used as fertilizer for gardening.
