Cyprus: At 940 euros the minimum wage – Effective from yesterday

It entered into force from yesterday 1/1/2023 at Cyprus its institution National Minimum Wagein accordance with the Decree of the Council of Ministers, which was approved at its meeting on August 31 and published in the official Gazette of the Republic a few days later.

Based on the Decree, the minimum monthly salary paid to any employee in the Republic is determined from January 1, 2023 to 940 euros (gross) for full time employment.

As clarified, the amount in question will be paid by the employer to the employee, only after six months of continuous employment in the same company. For the first six months, the minimum monthly salary is set at 885 euros for full-time employment. In the cases of part-time employees, except in the case of security guards and cleaners where there is an hourly wage, for the other professions covered by the “Decree on Minimum Wages”, the hourly wage is calculated in proportion to the employees’ usual weekly hours in the business, where it exists, full-time or during general industry hours.

It is worth noting that the provisions of the Decree do not apply:

-To domestic workers, agricultural workers and shipping workers.

-For any employee for whom more favorable arrangements apply based on law or contract or practice or custom.

-For employees for whom the Minimum Wages in the Hotel Industry Decree of 2020 applies.

– For persons who receive training or education provided for by law, practice or custom to obtain a diploma and/or to practice their profession.

In addition, when the employer provides the employee with decent board and/or accommodation, he may, upon agreement, reduce the minimum monthly salary by up to 15% when board is provided, and/or by up to 10% when board is provided. The employee may terminate the above agreement for the provision of food or accommodation, with 45 days’ notice to the employer.

Cyprus Labor Minister Kyriakos Kousios spoke of a historic day. However, the guilds state that attention is needed in the implementation of the measure and that they will seek improvements in the said institutionalization.
