Britain: A new train strike has begun – Traffic chaos is expected

by

London, Thanasis Gavos

New strike action by 40,000 rail workers of the major union RMT has started since the morning in Britain.

It is the first of two 48-hour strikes called for this week in England, Scotland and Wales over pay demands.

On Thursday, the train drivers of the union organization Aslef will also go on strike.

The strike affects 14 major rail companies, which have canceled four out of five routes for the two-day period.

Inconvenience is expected to be great as it is the first day Britons return to work after the New Year holidays.

Unions accuse the government of “blocking” a deal on higher rises, while the government counters that unionists have rejected good offers of increases.

NHS England workers and driving examiners are also on strike on Tuesday.
