Russian intelligence’s interest in Germany is growing as Russia’s war with Ukraine continues
Russian intelligence’s interest in Germany is increasing as Russia’s war with Ukraine continues, according to the head of the Federal Republic of Germany’s agency for the protection of the constitution, Thomas Haldenwang.
The German counterintelligence chief – speaking to the German news agency dpa – referred to the recent arrest of an employee of Germany’s Federal Intelligence and Counterintelligence Service, who is suspected of spying for Russia. According to Haldenvung, this incident may indicate how real is the danger coming from Moscow.
Haldewang speculated that Russia is also trying to fill the void left by the expulsion of 40 Russian embassy staff over the situation in Ukraine, implying that Moscow is trying to cover the losses it has suffered.
“We are making great efforts to prevent the arrival in Germany of new persons who are involved with the Russian secret services,” Haldenbank underlined, clarifying that Germany made the process of granting visas to Russians more stringent. Germany’s counterintelligence chief also said Berlin expects the number of Russian cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns to increase, but the counterintelligence agency is well prepared to deal with such issues.
Haldenwang also included China and Iran among the states whose intelligence services have significant activity in Germany.
