The Paris prosecutor’s office has begun preliminary investigation against the former archbishop of the French capital, Michel Opeti, for the crime of sexual assault against a vulnerable person.

At the end of November 2021, Opeti submitted his resignation to Pope Francis, who immediately accepted it, after several newspapers wrote that he was having an affair with a woman, which he categorically denied. According to the news channel BFMTV, the former archbishop had a relationship with a vulnerable person who is under judicial protection.

A source with knowledge of the case said Opeti, 72, had been corresponding with the woman, whose consent would have to be confirmed because of her mental state.

“We don’t know if a lawsuit has been filed, so we can’t make any statement on the matter,” said Jean Renard, Opetti’s lawyer, who was also targeted for human resources management at the archdiocese.

Opeti joined the clergy at an advanced age – he was 44 when he was ordained, after practicing medicine for 11 years – and took over as archbishop of Paris in December 2017. During his tenure he had to manage the fire at Notre Dame, the 2019. He is known for his strict stances on family and bioethics and has regularly supported “pro-life marches”, anti-abortion movements.
