Putin sends new hypersonic cruise missiles into the Atlantic Ocean

The Russian president said that the new supersonic Zircon cruise missiles are unique in the world.

THE Russian President Vladimir Putin today sent to the Atlantic and Pacific oceans a frigate equipped with new Zircon supersonic cruise missiles which as he said it is unique in the world.

In a video conference with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Igor Krokhmal, commander of the frigate, which is nicknamed “Admiral of the Soviet Union Fleet Gorshkov”, Putin said the ship carries Zircon hypersonic weapons.

“This time the ship is equipped with the latest hypersonic missile system — ‘Zircon’ — which has nothing like it,” said Putin, who has been embroiled in a standoff with the West over his war in Ukraine.

“I would like to wish the crew of the ship success in their service for the good of the Motherland.”

Shoigu said the Gorshkov will sail in the Atlantic and Indian oceans and the Mediterranean.

“This ship, equipped with [πυραύλους] “Zircon” is capable of spotting and delivering powerful strikes against the enemy at sea and on land,” Shoigu said.

Shoigu said the hypersonic missiles, known as Tsirkon or Zircon, can overpower any missile defense system. The missiles fly at nine times the speed of sound and have a range of more than 1,000 kilometers, Shoigu said.

Russia, China and the United States have engaged in a supersonic arms race. Because of their speeds — more than five times the speed of sound — and maneuverability, such weapons are seen as a way to gain an advantage over any adversary.

The target of a hypersonic weapon is much more difficult to estimate than for intercontinental ballistic missiles.
